Momentum is the leader´s best friend
Have you ever experienced total flow in a group or an organization? If you have, you know what I mean. Basically all problems are taken care of, and everyone is supporting and helping each other. Momentum takes care of more than 80 % of all problems.
To create momentum, you need to have growth. Start with yourself and make sure that you are growing as a leader.
When you communicate, you have to be clear that everybody counts. When people feel that they belong in a group or in a company, they start to grow themselves.
If you continuously work on creating momentum, you eventually reach a point where a breakthrough happens.
This breakthrough makes sure that the needs of the organization always will be met.
People will deliberately develop themselves and the organization. Personal and company growth is the way of living and generates engagement and passion in every one.
The company culture is known for its success, and everyone expects it because it is happening all the time. Success breeds success.
However, it is easy for the leader to take a step back when momentum is there. Even though it doesn´t take as much effort to keep the momentum going, it is essential to pour in more energy continuously. Otherwise, the momentum will disappear, and the problems will start arising much more frequently again.
Identify the momentum-people
When you want to establish momentum in an organization, you cannot do it solemnly by yourself. Be strategic and identify the people who are momentum makers. Encourage them and make them your allies. These people will help you build more momentum.
Create new momentum makers and get rid of the momentum breakers and takers. Read more about having the right people on the bus here. If you have a “bad apple” in a group, the whole performance of the group will be affected, and the overall result will be average.
Create your momentum
The best way to create your energy is to do small things every day. You will never be able to handle the big things in life if you cannot control the little things.
It is like making your bed every day. If you have a bad day, you will at least come home to a bed that you have made. It gives you a certain amount of self-esteem, and you feel better about yourself.
Tell yourself regularly that you are fantastic. Give yourself a pad on the back or a high five to your mirror reflection. If repetition is the mother of skills, then praise is the father of momentum. Your emotion of feeling good builds your courage.
Human momentum is the forward motion of emotions. By creating positive emotions, you will be unstoppable.
You can prime yourself with positive affirmations and self-talk. It allows you to be in a positive state all the time, and your decision and actions will guide you accordingly to your success.
Communicate momentum as the desired outcome
When you communicate about momentum, you can use metaphors such as fly-wheels, trains, or other heavy things, so people will understand what you mean. I usually use the analogy with a train. Running at a low speed, a small rock on the railway will stop the train.
If the train, on the other hand, is running at full speed, I would efficiently run through a thick brick wall without stopping.
Talk about the behaviors that you want to see for momentum to happen in the organization. I usually use the agreed-upon value words such as cooperation, praise, gratefulness, helping others, etc.
You can have your value word. The important thing is that everyone embraces and behave accordingly.
Learn to appreciate momentum, and once you have experienced it, you will want to create it again. Momentum is your best friend and your ticket to success.
