How to become a life coach

The best leaders have understood that it´s not how many people you lead it is how many new leaders you will create. Leadership is influence, and the more you can influence others, the better the result is going to be.

Influence is not bringing others to your truth; it is to make them come around their truth.

Coaching addresses the performance gap, the difference between what we know, and what we do.

Any change is not going to happen unless we change our behavior. First, we need to change our perception of ourselves and the world around us.

Fact is truth, but perception is reality. Everyone has a view of their world.

Coaching is a tool to change another person’s view of their world.

To live a fulfilled life, you need to understand the 6 human needs for you to be able to be a life coach.

In business, It is often the leader's task to coach others based upon their performance. However, if you are aware of the 6 human needs, you will be able to understand more about their real needs, and you can help them to come around their truth.

People will follow you because you have helped them and when they know that you are there for them.

There are numerous coaching techniques out there, but in coaching, technique only stands for 1%, and the rest is your awareness.

Presence

As a coach, you need to be fully present and create rapport. The other person must feel that your focus is entirely at them and that they can trust you. Try not to talk about your own experience or in other ways; try to steal their thunder.

Active Listening

Practice active listening. Sometimes it is better to be quiet instead of asking the next question. When the other person is silent, it is because he or she is thinking and that is when the magic happens. Try not to interrupt that.

Curiosity

Ask questions and be curious. Questions such as:

How interesting, tell me more; are efficient if you want to understand more.

If the other person can not see the answer, you can ask a What if -question.

What if you were to know what to do, then what should it be?

Do you know someone who would cope with this issue, what would that person do?

Process

1. Define the topic what the other person would like to talk about.

2. What is the desired outcome? Set a goal in 6 months or a year from now.

3. Set an outcome for the session

4. Define the present situation. What are the problems and related consequences?

5. What are the options for solving the problems?

6. The way forward (What will be the next step)

At the end of the session, you have to summarize and define what will happen until the next time you meet.

It is also good to ask evaluating questions about the coaching session itself for you to learn and get a feeling of what you can improve until future coaching events.

Once you have started practicing coaching, you will get better.

Repetition is the mother of skill, and you have to remember to praise yourself during your journey of becoming a fully developed life coach.
